Enabling greater climate resilience and improved health outcomes

We attempt to work at the intersection of city systems and the thematic areas of climate and urban public health to enable the systemic transformation of India’s cities and towns. Our aim is to improve quality of life, especially for women and the urban poor, by improving the quality of city infrastructure and services.

Program Details

In our mission to strengthen city-systems and build inclusive, resilient cities, we explored the below possibilities under Public Health and Climate:

  • Conducted a landscape study on the role of Urban Local Bodies in Primary Health Care in Bihar.
This included understanding the role of ULBs in primary healthcare, a study of primary healthcare systems and their readiness within and outside the state, as well as an analysis of the synergies of XV FC health grants with NUHM. Additionally, we also assisted the state in drafting a roadmap to strengthen ULBs in primary healthcare.
  • Environmental sustainability was undertaken across various national-level governance initiatives towards climate change.
We analysed environmental urban governance at the Centre level through the identification of 16 Union Ministries working on 186 schemes/missions. We also shortlisted 12 schemes for deep work with detailed financial analysis of the same.
  •  A Karnataka Cities Blueprint on solutions (i.e. what needs to be done in terms of policy reforms) and pathways to solutions (i.e. how solutions can be catalysed).

As part of this project, we mainstreamed environmental sustainability in urban policies by assessing the gaps in cities’ environment governance (through the questionnaire prepared using Environment City-Systems Framework as well as the CSCAF Framework) and interviewing 100+ systemic stakeholders (sectoral experts, government stakeholders, and community organisations). The larger objective is to engage closely with ULBs in building capacities to enable strong local action in combating climate change.
